We offer an extensive range of services and treatment options for sporting injuries, long standing conditions and musculoskeletal problems. The services include:

- Hydrotherapy
- Exercise prescription
- Electrotherapy
- Sports injury clinic
- Stroke rehab
- 10 point screening check
Your treatment is goal-oriented. We prioritize your problem areas and formulate the treatment that will give the most benefit to one or several problematic areas. Your initial appointment will be one hour. This time allows us to look at the whole picture of what is occurring, allowing us to maximise treatment and not give a ‘Band-Aid Fix’.
Your treatment will include ‘homework’ exercises, which will help prevent re-occurrence of your symptoms. Subsequent visits may be booked for a half hour or one hour period.
Physiotherapy services for children
Children may need to see a physiotherapist for a variety of reasons during their development. Children can be referred by parents, doctor, child health nurse or other professions.
Our services at Shiel Family Physiotherapy include individual sessions for child and parent, hydrotherapy and school visits by arrangement.
Babies
Physiotherapy can assist with your baby’s development and gross motor skills such as head control, learning to roll, sit up and stand. At this stage treatment includes lots of advice for parents, activities to try at home and close contact with all members of the medical team such as the GP and child health nurse.
Toddlers
Physiotherapy for this age group often includes checking foot position and how a child is sitting and walking. Once a toddler is on the move, physiotherapy does not usually feature heavily for this age group.
As a general rule babies should be taking weight through their lower limbs by the time they are 12 months old.
Early Childhood/Primary Years
A simple screening check done by a physiotherapist can assess whether your child is performing all the gross motor skills required for physical play. This includes hopping, jumping, catching and skipping. Co-ordination and trunk strength are frequently an issue for this age group.
High Schoolers/Teenagers
This age group commonly require advice, strengthening and stretching due to pain caused by poor posture. Sports injuries may also need attention!
Hydrotherapy services
Shiel Family Physiotherapy hire Albany’s hospital hydrotherapy pool on a regular basis.
The Pool
Water temperature 33°
- 8 x 6 metres with carefully graduated depth
- Disabled access via hoist or steps
Hydrotherapy is simply water therapy and is a form of exercise which has been used by people for hundreds of years.
Hydrotherapy sessions are taken by qualified physiotherapists, who provide individual treatment or group exercises and activities.
Use and Benefits
Movements that may be painful on dry land can be undertaken in water with little or no pain. Deep water allows the client to exercise all muscle groups and move all joints through a complete range of motion. The heat of the water decreases muscle spasm, relaxes tense muscles, relieves pain and can increase range of motion.
Note
Some medical conditions can be aggravated by hydrotherapy. Therefore a full physiotherapy/hydrotherapy assessment is carried out prior to hydrotherapy participation.
Workers Compensation
Physiotherapy can assist people who have had a work-related injury. A worker must report their injury to their employer, consult their GP and obtain a referral for physiotherapy (A claim number may not be available immediately; if this is the case treatment can still be started.)
Initially, physiotherapy can treat the injury that has occurred and help to reduce pain while improving function. Sometimes a worker may need to be off work for a while. At other times the worker may continue to work while receiving treatment.
Our treatment goal is to facilitate a rehabilitation programme, which will enable a return to original duties. A vocational rehab provider may work closely with your physiotherapist to aid your recovery and workplace performance. We can arrange for a workplace assessment to be carried out to help you.
Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA)
We offer a variety of physiotherapy services for DVA patients. If you are a DVA card holder we can invoice Department of Veteran Affairs direct. You will require the correct DVA referral form from your doctor, which you will need to bring along to your initial consultation. Our services include:
- Hydrotherapy
- Clinical Pilates
- Musculoskeletal physiotherapy
Your assessment will be one hour. This gives us time to thoroughly assess your problem areas and formulate a treatment plan to suit your individual needs. Your follow up visit may be a half hour or one hour depending on the physiotherapist’s discretion and what is required. You may also be referred to one of our hydrotherapy sessions.
