Physiotherpy for Children

Children may need to see a physiotherapist for a variety of reasons during their development. Children can be referred by parents, doctors, child health nurse or other professionals.

Please enquire about our current paediatric services.

Babies:

Physiotherapy can assist with your baby’s development and gross motor skills such as head control, learning to roll, sit up and stand. At this stage treatment includes lots of advice for parents, activities to try at home and close contact with all members of the medical team such as the GP and child health nurse. As a general rule babies should be taking weight thought their lower limbs by the time they are 12 months old.

Toddlers:

Physiotherapy for this age group often includes checking foot position and how a child is sitting and walking. Once a toddler is on the move physiotherapy doesn’t usually feature heavily for this age group.

Early Childhood / Primary Years:

A simple screening check done by a physiotherapist can assess whether your child is performing all the gross motor skills required for physical play. This includes hopping, jumping, catching and skipping. Co-ordination and trunk strength are frequently an issue for this age group.

High Schoolers / Teenagers:

This age group commonly require advice, strengthening and stretching due to pain caused by poor posture. Sports injuries may also need attention!
