Physiotherapy during Pregnancy

Our physiotherapists have an interest in addressing your specific pregnancy related health needs. We recognise that during this important time every individual will have specific physical requirements and so we offer a variety of options for your pregnancy care.

We recommend that you check with your GP prior to commencing an exercise programme. For your safety we require that you complete a physiotherapy assessment so that our physiotherapists can guide your choice of exercise and treatment during pregnancy.

Individual Clinical Pilates:
Clinical Pilates is a safe form of exercise which can be continued during pregnancy. We recommend that, if possible, you commence a programme prior to pregnancy for preparation for the physical changes that occur in the first trimester.

Individual Physiotherapy:
Treatment of back, pelvic pain and other issues, assessment and fitting of pregnancy braces and supports, individual exercise programmes, postural advice and assessment of pelvic floor muscles.

Pregnancy Pilates Classes:
Small group exercise classes with safe, low impact, fun clinical pilates classes to help cope with physical changes during pregnancy.
The carefully selected exercises address postural changes, joint laxity, balance and fatigue while also preparing you for delivery. Classes include cardiovascular work and stretching in addition to core stability. We use the physio-ball and there is an option to utilise hand weights and ankle weights.

Pregnancy Hydrotherapy Classes:
Pilates based core stability work in the hydrotherapy pool. These classes are particularly effective in lowering blood glucose levels and assisting you to control gestational diabetes.

Prep for Labour Classes:
These classes run once a month and we strongly encourage and welcome Dads or support partners to attend.  Classes are 3 hours long and are run on weekends. The classes provide a positive approach to childbirth and cover pain mechanisms, comfort positions, breathing and vocalisation skills, movement strategies, pain relief, the support person’s role and relaxation. A clinical hypnotherapist co-presents these classes.
